Today the North Chagrin Reservation, part of Cleveland Metroparks, in Mayfield Village, OH.
First the Buttermilk Falls Loop Trail.

Buttermilk Falls |
Buttermilk Falls Creek above falls (KSS) |
Note the layers of shale rock.
Buttermilk Falls Creek gorge |
Filtered light in the woods |
Next we followed the Hemlock Trail along the edge of the ravine.
Fagus grandifolia/American Beech tree trunk |
Tamiko on Hemlock Trail (KSS) |
Tamias striatus/Eastern Chipmunk |
Tsuga canadensis/Eastern Hemlocks |
Some kind of maple tree with rough bark |
Washout (KSS) |
Probably Fraxinus sp/Ash saplings |
Young folks, be aware. Although the above plant is likely an ash tree baby, when hiking in the woods, the rule is "Leaves of three, Let it be." Because it might be Toxicodendron radicans/Poison Ivy which will cause an irritable rash!
Toxicodendron radicans/Poison Ivy (pale green in photo) and Impatiens capensis/Jewelweed |
If you believe you have contacted poison ivy, you may find the Jewelweed growing right along with it. The sap from the Jewelweed stems can be rubbed on the skin to counteract the toxins.
Happy Hiking!
