Viking Homelands: Viking Star (8/25/2018)

Saturday, August 25, 2018 (continued)
The MV Viking Star was built in 2015, the first ship of the ocean cruise division of Viking Cruises. Designed in London and built in Italy, the Viking Star is built for maximum fuel efficiency. Scandinavian influence dominates the interior (designed by a Los Angeles firm).
The Viking Classical Trio
serenades guests as a welcome
There is also a resident pianist and a resident guitarist, who with the Classical Trio, are scheduled to provide background music in various venues throughout the afternoon and evening. A Viking Band accompanies the Viking entertainers (singers and dancers) and play in the Torshavn nightclub.
The Grand Staircase, featuring changing photos
The room is considerably larger than those on a river cruise ship
Plus even the lowest level staterooms have a veranda
The bathroom is larger...
...with a shower that is nearly twice the size of
those on the river cruise ships
The dining venue, World Café, is double-sided, with a complete
buffet on each side
and seating on both sides, mostly for couples or foursomes
When you entered the World Café, you were asked to wash or
sanitize your hands, because it is a buffet restaurant (8/28/2018)
Waitstaff would bring beverages of your choice, but you may serve
yourself, or get yourself a beverage here 24/7 (8/28/2018)
The "Cold" section had fruit, a few appetizers, cold cuts and cheese...
...and salad makings with a couple different "mixed" salads (8/28/2018)
The "Cold" section on the port side of the ship had seafood (crab legs, langoustines, etc.) and a sushi bar.
The "Hot" section always had rice, a couple starch options,
and a few vegetable options and a pasta dish...
...plus several meat options and a carved meat,
and you could always request a steak or chicken breast...
...plus a few seafood options  (8/28/2018)
The "Bakery" section had a variety of breads...
...a variety of desserts (there is a mirror half to the dessert display)...
...and on the starboard side there are always two pizza options (8/28/2018)
The "Bakery" on the port side had the ice cream offerings.
The World Café had different entrées and desserts at lunch and dinner, and each day.
Most days at dinner, there was a special
offered on the Aquavit Terrace (8/28/2018)
On this day there was lutefisk (cod marinated in lye),
with black bread, puréed peas, and fingerling potatoes (8/28/2018)
The Aquavit Terrace has an infinity pool (8/26/2018)
Often we took an evening constitutional:
The funnel of the Viking Star
Deck 9 was the Sports Deck with shuffleboard, a bocce court
that was more often used for corn hole, a putting green,
and a few stationary exercise machines
Deck 9 was not a full deck and was reached from the Deck 8, the Sun Deck. The Sun Deck was open to the sun, but in the center was the roof over the swimming pool, so that it was basically the deck where you could walk in elongated circles.
The Explorers Lounge on Deck 7...
...had a second level comparable to Deck 8, and both levels
had a great view out the front of the ship
In the middle of Deck 7 is the swimming pool (8/26/2018)
Behind the pool on Deck 7 is the Wintergarden,
used for Tea Time at 16:00-17:00 every afternoon (8/28/2018)
The Wintergarden bar coffee maker (8/28/2018)
Raining again as the sun sets about 21:00
The evening entertainment in the Star Theater tonight was
classical violinist Tor Jaran Apold (Sjur Hjeltnes on piano);
you had to be impressed with the virtuosity of the violinist
Next: Bergen II.
