Smedley Park Orange Trail (9/3/2024)

Tuesday, September 3, 2024
We are trying to walk 3-5 miles per day to condition ourselves for the next big trip to higher elevations. After walking the supposed 2.5-mile Orange Trail at Smedley Park in Springfield, PA, we were credited with 6 miles.
The trail started out as a gravel path
There were several stepping-stone water crossings
We saw many unnatural features, such as this
wooden structure (to corral floodwaters?)
A rusty pipe sticks out over the dropoff
A fallen tree is only a slight hindrance
Nice trail marker
Discarded water bottle
A bicycle chain
A warped wooden bridge
It seemed we spent a great deal of time
"on the edge" with the ground dropping
steeply to the left
We followed the liquified natural gas/LNG pipeline
for a short distance
Oh, not a snake; just a shoelace
A relatively new bridge near Jane Lownes Park
A boardwalk with non-skid treads
Who hauled this desk/table deep into the woods?
Path cut through a fallen tree, with the addition of
trunk slices as stepping stones?
Flower of a Sicyos angulata/Burcucumber vine
We crossed and recrossed under I-476
Can you see the red-disc rope swing and
its reflection in Crum Creek?
One of two baseball diamonds
One of two playgrounds
This is where the Red Trail heads southwest
They could not quite cut through the fallen tree?
A bridge shared by the Yellow, Orange, and Red Trails
Our final obstacle before reaching the car
