Granger Homestead Festival of Trees (11/24/2024)

Sunday, November 24, 2024
A stop in Canandaigua, NY to see the Granger Homestead Festival of Trees.
The Granger Homestead is actually known for its
Carriage Museum with the largest horse-drawn carriage
collection in Western New York; the carriages are
displayed in several barns, this is the 1876 barn that
started as a 3-story schoolhouse annex, which was
originally attached to the mansion but moved in 1907
The 1816 barn was moved during the 1890s and is now
used as an agricultural implement exhibit
As was the custom, Walter Hubbell built a law office (c 1822)
in front of his home on Main Street in Canadaigua;
Stephen Douglas (later a Senator from Illinois) studied law
with Hubbell in this office; it was moved here in 1960 and
restored, and for the holidays it appears to be an Elf School
We believe this shed is for Santa Claus
to greet young children before Christmas
Gas House (c 1903-1904) was built during the era when
the mansion was the Granger Place School [for Girls]; to
save on the cost of gas, the school produced acetylene
gas on the premises, and not only was it cheaper and
easier than coal gas, it also provided a brighter light
Granger Mansion (1816, in Federal style) was built for
Gideon Granger after he served as Postmaster General
under Presidents Thomas Jefferson and James Madison
The Festival of Trees is the annual fundraiser
for the Granger Homestead, featuring (but
not for sale!) their own Nutcracker Tree (KSS)
Various organizations, businesses and individuals decorate
artificial trees (also wreaths, centerpieces, etc) for display,
which then can be bid upon in a Silent Auction; here the
Finger Lakes Community College has a unique tree skirt
What a great table decoration! (KSS)
Unique ideas such as covering the
outside of a tree as an angel (KSS)
Mantel decorations were also up for bid,
and we see the parlor fireplace and chandelier
The library offered Christmas-themed quilts ... (KSS)
... and a Minecraft tree, with another chandelier and
a decorated fireplace (KSS)
