His father owned Newman-Stern Co, a sporting goods store, with a brother, located at E 12th and Walnut Streets in Cleveland. Paul worked there for 18 months after his father died in 1950, before moving to New England. Newman-Stern was sold, and other family members started Newman-Adler in 1967, which may have become Newman Outfitters in 1988, once located at 20180 Van Aken Boulevard in Shaker Heights.
