Alaska Cruise: At Sea: Glacier Bay (8/3/2019)

Saturday, August 3, 2019
Norwegian Cruise Lines is one of five cruise companies permitted to sail in Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve (next year there will be seven). Apparently earlier in the morning, National Park Rangers boarded the ship and have set up shop in the Spinnaker Lounge. Ranger Matt must have been up on the bridge as his commentary came over the public address system. Glaciers 101 in easy to understand language with humor, and sights being pointed out. There was a major plug for protecting our natural resources, i.e., doing something about climate change.

Grand Pacific Glacier far ahead
Alpine glaciers end up still in the mountains
Starting to see ice chunks and change in color
with new water flowing from the glacier into the bay
First view of Margerie Glacier, a tidal glacier
that comes all the way to the sea
Margerie Glacier panorama; it is about one mile wide and 250 feet high above water and 100 feet deep
below water; occasionally chunks of ice would slide down the face to splash in the water
with a thundering sound; however, some of the thundering may have been cracking within the glacier
