Philadelphia Frostbite Regatta (11/12/2022)

Saturday, November 12, 2022
On the last weekend of the Fall crew season, we had the opportunity to see our grandson, Dylan, row in the Philadelphia Frostbite Regatta. However, it does not take place in Philadelphia, rather, in West Windsor, NJ.
Sculptures Along the Way (in Hamilton, NJ) caught our
attention, featuring larger than life-size sculptures
by J Seward Johnson; in the foreground is his rendering
of Dance at Bougival (1883, by Pierre-Auguste Renoir)
that is titled A Turn of the Century (1995, 2003)
Whispering Close (2000, 2009) is based on
Dance in the City (1883, by Renoir); there
are also a pair of Los Mariachis (1994, 2010)
Sculptures Along the Way is part of public art installations meant to guide the way to Grounds for Sculpture, a large sculpture park and museum in Hamilton, NJ, that was founded by J Seward Johnson.
Time for Fun (2000, 2009) is based on
Dance in the Country (1883, by Renoir)
We arrived early at Mercer County Park, for the regatta on Lake Mercer, and set up chairs near the finish line.

is a training site for Olympic and U.S.

We learned there was a two-hour delay for the races, due to high winds causing a strong current. So we went exploring.
On normal days one may rent a boat, but today the boats
were being used by race officials; across the lake is
Caspersen Rowing Center, home of the
Princeton National Rowing Association
The Boathouse at Mercer Lake is an event venue, and
has a snack bar on a lower level, staffed by one older woman
Hey, they are starting to man the rowing shells/boats!
We found Dylan where all the rowing shells await,
and were informed the races were about to begin

Action at the finish line!
Dylan's 8 crew heads back after their race; Dylan is
smack in the middle, the fourth seat rower from the coxswain
Closer to the far shore, Dylan's 4 crew races to the finish
This time Dylan is in the third seat, and we get a fine
view of the of the green and white striped uniform (KSS)
