2022 Antarctica: Antarctic Peninsula, Half Moon Island (12/17/2022)

Daption capense/Cape Petrels bob in the water as the
Zodiacs load for a cruise and landing on Half Moon Island,
an island in the South Shetland Islands

The volcanic bedrock of Half Moon Island seems to
indicate it is a partial caldera of an old volcano
Buildings of the Argentine Cámara Base,
not yet open for the season

There is a colony of Pygoscelis antarcticus/
Chinstrap Penguins (KSS)
Most of the Chinstrap penguins appeared to be on the move
Buellia spp (black lichen) perhaps

followed a penguin highway, but kept stopping to preen
This Chinstrap has a more prominent "chin strap" (KSS)

This time they had us scrub our pant legs
and boots before reboarding the
Zodiacs to return to the ship
