After lunch on the Viking Sea, we went on the included shore excursion called
View of Barbados.
We drove past Rihanna's childhood neighborhood along Westbury New Road.
Our first stop was in Farley Hill National Park, an estate with the ruins of a mansion destroyed by fire in 1965 |
We were here for the views (toward the east coast) ... |
... and for free drinks, of rum punch or fruit juices |
The mansion was situated in a grove of Swietenia mahagoni/West Indian Mahogany trees |
Perhaps you can see the fruit in the trees |
The fruit is a woody capsule containing winged seeds |
To the right are Casuarina equisetifolia/ Casuarina Trees, one of the exported trees planted by the former owner |
The strange bases of the mahogany trees |
The outlet to the Caribbean Sea at the Port Ferdinand Luxury Resort and Residences |
The neighborhood outside Port Ferdinand |
Port Ferdinand |
Driving through the narrow streets of Speightstown, which was the main town in Barbados before Bridgetown |
The best beach bar in Speightstown |
Mullins Beach maybe |
Sea Turtle Crossing sign, although the wall blocks the turtles from reaching the road |
Pier and mangroves |
Chattel Village (rather than a mall, shops in the style of local homes) in Holetown, the oldest town (1627) in Barbados |
Entrance to the Sandy Lane Country Club with three elite, exclusive, and legendary golf courses; across the street is the Sandy Lane Hotel and residences; Rihanna owns the top floor condo at #1 Sandy Lane |
Kensington Oval, the National Cricket Stadium (2005-2007 on the site of the 1882 Kensington Oval) |
Barbados was one of six West Indies countries to host matches of the 2007 Cricket World Cup, and they also hosted the final between Australia and Sri Lanka.
Next: Antigua Excursion.
