West Indies Adventure: Viking Sea (12/8-20/2023)

Friday, December 8, 2023
We booked the Viking ocean cruise called Amazon & Caribbean. Apparently due to record low water levels in the Amazon River, Viking did not feel they could navigate from Manaus, Brazil. The cruise became the West Indies Adventure, visiting Caribbean islands. Fortunately for us, we have not previously been to these islands, unlike many other disappointed passengers.
About 600 out of 900 passengers accepted the incentives
to go ahead with this cruise on the Viking Sea (2014-2015)
We were upgraded to the so-called Penthouse Veranda
stateroom (every stateroom has a veranda, anyway)
It certainly was the roomiest stateroom we have ever had
Typical Viking ship bathroom

View toward the San Juan Port
We arrived on a direct flight from Philadelphia to San Juan,and were transferred to the Viking Sea. It was after 16:00 when we got a bite to eat at the Pool Grill (no meal on the flight).
Being too late to explore San Juan, we decided to
start the jigsaw puzzle

We finished the 2,000-piece jigsaw puzzle (with occasional
help from other passengers); but one piece was missing
Baggo (like corn hole) was played in the Atrium
Each round progressed up one step (KSS)
There was also shuffleboard
Miniature golf
Bocce, where the court was also used for Baggo
Today's lecture was on the Bayeux Tapestry,
which is illustrated in the stairwells
Reservations are required at two of the restaurants,
this was Manfredi's with Italian cuisine;
Costata di Maiale/pork chop with sautéed zucchini strings
We did not have enough appetite to eat dessert (tiramisu)
right away; however, you cannot take the dessert with you:
instead they deliver it to your stateroom!

Today we had dinner in the second reservation-required
restaurant, The Chef's Table, which specializes in a
five-course degustation menu with wine pairings;
today the Amuse-bouche was a Sweet Potato Chip topped with
crème fraîche and apple, accompanied by caramelized lemon
The First Course was Crab Cake on a puréed avocado base,
topped with a fennel and shallot slaw, plus
sections of an orange and blood orange
Oops, no photo of the Granita for palate cleansing, which was called Moscow Mule and made with vodka, ginger beer, and lime juice.
Main Course was Seared Halibut sitting on halved
cherry tomatoes in a California olive and herb vinaigrette,
and topped with arugula
Dessert was Ojai Mandarin Parfait with candied ginger;
the Ojai pixie tangerine is grown in Ojai, CA
The theme today for The Chef's Table was California Cuisine.
Another 1,000-piece puzzle was completed today;
it was missing one piece
