Dubrovnik, Croatia I (5/3/2025)

Saturday, May 3, 2025
Last night we traveled "back" to Dubrovnik, Croatia.
Dubrovnik is widely considered one of the 'best-preserved' medieval cities in the world. It was also where much of the Game of Thrones television series was filmed.
The morning included shore excursion began at the
Ploče Gate (1476) where much of the fortifications
were built under the independent Republic of Ragusa
Old port of Dubrovnik used by fishermen
Roman Catholic Cathedral of the Assumption of the
Virgin Mary (1671-1713, in Baroque style after the
1667 earthquake destroyed the 12C basilica partially funded
by Richard the Lion-hearted after he survived a shipwreck
near here in 1192 on his return from the Third Crusade)
Pedestrian street cleaner
Rector's Palace (13C, multiple rebuilding to the 17C) was
the home of the ruler of the Republic of Ragusa; the front
of the palace was the backdrop for the Game of Thrones scene
when Daenerys Targaryen asks the Spice King of Quarth
for ships to take her army across the Narrow Sea

Baro and Maro are the bronze bellringers who
ring the bell at noon in the Clock Tower
Market Square statue (1893) of the Baroque
poet Ivan Gundulić who is claimed by Croats
and Serbs, but he considered himself a Slav
Market Square fountain once used to
wash produce

Game of Thrones, the pilgrims ring bells
and and cry "Shame! Shame! Shame!"

Serbian Orthodox Church of the Annunciation
(1877, in Neo-Byzantine style, restored
after the 1991 Siege of Dubrovnik)
Unusual for an Orthodox Church,
there are chairs

Holy Savior Square with Onofrio's Big Fountain
(1438-1440) and Church of the Holy Savior (c 1520
in thanks for surviving an earthquake)
Onofrio's Big Fountain provided fresh water
brought seven miles from the mountains
Holy Savior Church survived the 1667
earthquake as well as the 1991 Siege of
Dubrovnik with only shrapnel scars
Entrance to the Franciscan Monastery
(c 1317), now a museum
Just outside the museum is a pharmacy that has continually
been in business for over 100 years, whereas in the Franciscan
Monastery itself is a pharmacy dating to 1317
Bayer Aspirin ad (c 1900)
Tamiko was unable to stand on one foot on the
gargoyle head to make a wish come true
Exiting Pile Gate (1533-1537)
A figure of St Blaise, patron saint of
Dubrovnik, over the inner gate
A woman in traditional dress manages
pedestrian traffic at the gate
St Blaise also stands over the outer gate;
he is usually depicted holding a model
 of the city of Dubrovnik
Bokar Fortress (1461-1463, by Michelozzo di Bartolomeo)
may be better known as King's Landing in the Game of Thrones
Looking out at Backwater Bay (oops, that was
in the Game of Thrones), rather, the Adriatic Sea
Fort St Lawrence (c 1018-1038) is the oldest fortress in
Dubrovnik, and served as the Red Keep in Game of Thrones
Amerlingo's Fountain (1900, by Ivan Rendić)
based on a scene from Dubravka,
written the poet Ivan Gundulić
Looking up the hill at Minčeta Tower
(base 1319, top 1464) is the filming location for
Khaleesi Daenerys Targaryen walking around
looking for the entrance in Game of Thrones

Stradun was once a canal separating the mainland Slavs
from the island of Ragusa Romans; in 11C it was filled in
to merge the settlements and create a wide avenue
The shop windows are characterized by
the 'P-shape' to maximize visibility
of goods with better access security
