Thursday, July 4, 2019
Happy Independence Day! (But happy to be abroad today!)
Breakfast at Landgasthof Karner
Frasdorf Maypole that has the horizontal wreath
above the signs of local trades
Another short detour from the Alpenstrasse/Alpine Road took us to Prien am Chiemsee.
Chiemsee-Bahn/Railroad (the oldest continuously operated steam tramway
in the world) runs from the Prien train station to the lake of Chiemsee
Here we took a boat to the island of Herreninsel/Gentlemen Island,
on Bavaria's largest lake
Leaving Prien am Chiemsee (note the flag/colors of the state of Bavaria,
one of two official flags, the other being of angled diamonds/lozenges)
More traditional Bavarian flag
Arriving at Herreninsel
A walk through the forest brought us to Schloss/Castle Herrenchiemsee
(the current US president will note the 'raked" forest)
The Lawn at Herrenchiemsee leads to one side of the island,
the planned fountains and boat landing were not completed
A robomower has some fancy maneuvers to make
(and how does it not mow down the plots of red begonias?)
Latona Fountain, a copy of one at Versailles, in wedding-cake style with
the goddess Latona (Leto in Greek mythology), who was the mother of
twins Apollo and Diana (Artemis), fathered by Jupiter (Zeus)
Close-up of figures of the Latona Fountain
Oh, they just turned on the water!
Gardener's "secret" passage through the hedge
Solar-powered trash compactor (KSS)
Fama Fountain
Allée of the original entry for Herrenchiemsee (KSS)
The front of Schloss/Castle Herrenchiemsee (1878-1886, by Georg Dollman),
which was inspired by Versailles, although not meant to be a copy

brothers who were born at Nymphenburg Palace in
München/Munich, to Maximilian II and Queen Marie

Replica of the throne room in the Residenz in München/Munich;
Ludwig II became king at age 18, when his father died in 1864
Royal robes for Ludwig II and his fiancée, Duchess Sophie Charlotte,
who were engaged in 1887, but Ludwig broke off the engagement
Ludwig II and his former fiancée shared an interest in Richard Wagner and his operas, and Ludwig became a patron of Wagner.
Diorama of stage set from Die Walküre/The Valkyrie, Hunding's Hut
Replica of the bedroom at Linderhof, dedicated to the
Sun King Louis XIV, with gold-embroidered tapestries
Also the mirror and stand made of Meissen porcelain
The unfinished parts of the palace are used as a
contemporary art gallery; Das Gute/The Good
(c 2001-2017, by Hans-Jörg Georgi)
The lift apparatus for the dining room table
