Albany, GA (2/15/2024)

Thursday, February 15, 2024 (continued)
We continued to Albany, GA.
Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church (est 1888, church 1953)
was where Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr was invited
to speak to the community that organized the first mass
civil rights movement with the goal of desegregation
Reverend King then went across the street to the
Zion Baptist Church (1906) to speak to a crowd there
that was so large, it spilled over to the Shiloh Church,
and King had to return to Shiloh for a third address
The next day in 1961, Reverend King joined the community in their march, and was arrested along with hundreds of others. The local police chief, Laurie Pritchett, happened to have studied the principles of non-violence by Mohatma Gandhi, and apparently tried to avoid overt police brutality. As the African Americans came out to demonstrate, he simply had them arrested and filled the jails of all the neighboring counties. Eventually the community ran out of people willing to march.
No photos were allowed in the Albany Civil Rights Institute
(1998) where we received a guided tour of the museum that
illustrated the events of the Albany Movement
Lessons learned in Albany, GA helped King prepare for the fight to come in Birmingham, AL. The Albany Movement is also where the Freedom Singers began, using the power of song to inspire and empower the crowds.
