Alfred Munson arrived in Utica from Connecticut in 1823, and earned his wealth in manufacturing, coalmines, canal development, and railroad and steamboat transportation. He and his wife, Elizabeth, had two children, Helen and Samuel. Helen married James Williams, and they had three daughters, Grace, Rachel, and Maria. Helen was a collector of 19C decorative and fine arts. Rachel and Maria married half-brothers Frederick and Thomas Proctor, and they continued the collection.
