Passage to Eastern Europe: Vidin, Bulgaria (8/20/2021)

Friday, August 20, 2021 (continued)
Our motorcoaches made a quick scenic drive through Vidin on the way back to Viking Ullur.
Исторически музей/Historical Museum (founded 1956)
is located in an 18C Ottoman konak/residence of an official
Glimpse of Храм Свети Николай Чудотворец/
Church of St Nicholas, Wonderworker (1926-1930)
Видинска света митрополия/Residence of the Vidin
Metropolitan (1924) with the Параклис Свети Пимен
Зографски/Chapel of St Pimen Zografski (stone chapel)
Джамия Осман Пазвантоглу/Osman
Pazvantoglu Mosque
(1801-1802);
the minaret is topped either by a spade
or an upside-down heart...
Ruins of Видинската синагога/
Vidin Synagogue (1890-1894, by V Kitov) (KSS)
Vidin Synagogue; after the roof caved in, the synagogue
has been neglected (KSS)
Vidin Synagogue (KSS)
The synagogue and mosque, along with an Orthodox church (I am not sure which one, some say St Dimitar and some say St Panteleimon) are said to make up a "Triangle of Religious Tolerance."
Hotel Impuls Palace - adding on?
China Mall Supermarket? Seems to be a
China-supplied department store (KSS)
Memorial (by Andrei Nikolov) to the Victims of the
1885 Serbo-Bulgarian War, depicts a grenadier
expressing grief of a fratricidal war
Our shore excursion motorcoaches
Aha!, a place where I can photograph
the entire Viking longship!
Fishing
Upon returning to Viking Ullur, we rushed to the reception to see if we had enough time to run into town to a post office. The staff told us they would take care of mailing our stamped in Bulgaria postcards!
These cookies were called Serbian Vanilice/vanilla,
but traditionally they are served sandwiched around jam
As we departed Vidin,  we saw a couple more sights:
Паметникът на свободата/Monument of Freedom (1965, by
Hristo Simeonov, Metodi Izmirliev, Ivan Petrov) is a relic of
the Communist era, and contains the remains of anti-fascists...
Крепост Баба Вида/Baba Vida Fortress (10C, destroyed
and rebuilt 14C) is said to be the only entirely
preserved medieval castle in Bulgaria
Нова Европа/New Europe Bridge (2007-2013) is an
extradosed bridge, generally meaning the structure
combines the main elements of both a prestressed
box girder bridge and a cable-stayed bridge,
which allows the cable-stayed towers to be shorter
Late sunlight on sandstone bluffs along the Danube
Dinner began with Kashkaval Pane/breaded fried cheese,
followed by this Balkan-style Moussaka
Pechena Yabulka/Thracian-style cinnamon baked apple
Sunset on the right bank of the Danube (we are
traveling upriver) means the river is now flowing north
Now we will show you our stateroom:
We always take a cabin in steerage, because all we do
is sleep there; hmm, I missed getting the body
temperature sensor on the corridor ceiling!
You tap the key card to unlock your door;
the key card is also used to sign out
and sign in on the ship
During the day, the bed is made and the drapes are open
Our usual view on this trip was the floating dock
After dinner, the drapes are closed and the Viking Daily
and the next day's shore excursion tickets are on the bed
Across from the foot of the bed: desk and
drawers, mini-refrigerator, flatscreen TV,
and on the counter is an ice bucket
and bottles of water
This time we were provided with hand sanitizer and
"medical" masks in black; in the corner are the QuietVox
devices with earpieces that allow us to listen to our
local guides while wandering off to take photos!
(the QuietVox devices must be recharged every night)
Looking back to the door, which has a
full-length mirror; on the left is the closet, and
on the right is the sliding door to "the head"
The head/bathroom with a vacuum toilet
(it sounds like it could suck down
whole apples!), and a fog-free mirror
The shower; the shower and bathroom floor
are heated (you can control the heat)
Every night we are provided with plastic tubes that
we have to fill with 2 ml of saliva in the morning before
eating or brushing our teeth, cap, place in a sealed envelope
and drop off at reception before 8:00 AM!
Tonight's presentation was The Legend of Dracula (the pre-cruise extension was to Transylvania).
We also had to remember to turn our clocks back one hour!
Next: Scenic Cruising on the Danube.
