Cairo: Oriental Carpet School (10/17/2023)

Tuesday, October 17, 2023 (continued)
A surprise stop at Oriental Carpet School, one of several such "schools" in the area. Students spend a couple hours knotting rugs, then attend regular school. Many of the carpets are made in home factories,
and I suspect the children already know how to make these handmade carpets.

Silk (imported from China) carpets require 400 knots per
square inch, and those of Egyptian cotton have 300-350
I have no idea how they follow the pattern
The pile is not much more than a half inch
From a single strand of silk or cotton, they must knot and cut
There were also several "table" looms that are
apparently more for "freestyle-designed" artistic rugs;
these looms are usually for weaving rugs
Up to the showroom (KSS)
The showroom can handle several tour groups at once!
We saw that the silk rugs have a different shade
when viewed from opposite sides
This is the same rug as in the photo above

"Contemporary" art carpets
I think the salesperson called these "Gobelins"
as in tapestries, and they are made with wool, or
was he referring to the couple on the table on the left?
