Jordan: Madaba Mosaics (10/27/2023)

Friday, October 27, 2023
Leaving the Dead Sea by motor coach, it is clear enough
to see the Judean Mountains on the West Bank
We climbed over the mountains on the Jordan side
We caught peeks of Bedouin encampments; camels
Sheep herd
The large Bedouin tents
Because of the scarcity of water, houses have their
own water tanks (white) on the roof
and water is delivered by tanker trucks
The first stop was at a the Madaba Mosaic Handicraft
Center to visit a mosaic workshop (KSS)
First an intricate design is drawn on a piece of cotton
Stone is cut into thin strips, and each artisan has
a pair of clippers to cut pieces to size,
which are meticulously glued into place
Placing mosaic pieces with tweezers, and using clippers
Once the mosaic is put together, it is actually the
reverse of the finished product; this mosaic will be
placed face down in plaster in a frame, and then
the cotton cloth will be soaked to remove it
A completed Tree of Life (here it is an olive tree) mosaic
Other artisans were painting pottery to resemble mosaics
Painting irises on a large vase
A miniature replica of the Memorial
Church of Moses (Mount Nebo) floor mosaic
Imagine placing mosaic pieces for lettering in Greek backwards!
Now we were shown into the immense handicraft shop
This is a camel hair woven rug
"Nano-sized" mosaic pieces in a Tree of Life pendant
Gorgeous colors in a silk carpet
Mosaic clocks
Mosaic look vases on an inlaid chest (KSS)
Inlaid wooden backgammon boards
Large "eggs" painted like mosaics
Inlaid wooden furniture
Unbelievable inlaid "nightstand"
Part of another silk carpet
Blue ceramics
Inlaid wooden box in a unique shape
Many of the mosaics became tabletops
Modern mosaic
Peacocks and the animals from the floor mosaic
at the Memorial Church of Moses on Mount Nebo
Our motor coach brought us into the center
of Madaba, and we walked past more
vendors, and a Starbucks?
It is the season for pomegranates, and
a street vendor squeezes them for juice
