2024 African Safari Plus: Flight to Okavango Delta (6/20/2024)

Thursday, June 20, 2024
After our final sunrise boat safari and breakfast at Chobe Game
Lodge, we were driven to the Kasane International Airport
The new terminal and air control tower were opened in 2019
We were taking a Mack Air 12-seater prop plane,
a Cessna Grand Caravan EX
Today we had both a pilot and co-pilot (KSS)
Kwai River bed, mostly dry (KSS)
View from the airplane over the bush (KSS)
First a stop at the Kwai Airstrip, with a sandy runway
marked with canvas strips anchored to the ground
The shadow of our plane (and a wheel of the plane!)
We began seeing the presence of water in the Okavango Delta,
an inland delta that does not flow into a sea, but creates a
vast wetland where water evaporates or transpires
Seasonal flooding occurs early in the year; however
this year there has been less rain, so we see the waterholes
and lagoons shaped like neurons with multiple dendrites
This is the "terminal" at the Santawani Airstrip where we
landed (the building holds fire supression equipment)
We will not see a paved road for a good while!
At the Rra Dinare/Father Buffalo camp, our accommodation
is a very large tent shaded by a canvas roof, with an
open-air shower "room" attached at the rear
The front of the tent is screened
We had to be sure to set the hook
holding the doors together, to
prevent baboons from entering
The king-size bed can be surrounded by mosquito netting
Double sinks and handcloth "sculptures"
Outdoor shower
Air horn by the bed to use in an emergency
View from our tent's deck
Raised walkway connected us to the living room and dining
tents that surrounded a huge Sclerocarya birrea/Marula Tree
Tamiko with the marula tree (KSS)
A large deck (where we had breakfast) looks over the savanna
Rra Dinare swimming pool
Dining tent, with coffee and tea always available
The tents are spaced far apart for privacy
Fire suppression equipment was available,
yet where would we get the water for the buckets?
Next: Rra Dinare Game Drives.
