2024 Road Scholar XXV: Thimphu Royal Takin Preserve (10/19/2024)

Saturday, October 19, 2024 (continued)
The buses picked us up from the National Memorial Chorten
to drive northwest to the Royal Takin Preserve
Life-size sculptures of the national animal of Bhutan,
the Budorcas whitei/Bhutan Takin that look like a cross
between a cow and a goat, and is in its own genus;
they are found in Bhutan and nearby areas of China (KSS)
Legend has it that the takin was created by the Buddhist yogi, Drupa Kunley. These particular takin once lived in a zoo, but were released by the 4th king as not in keeping with Buddhist religious and environmental convictions. However, they were too tame to survive in the wild, and are now fenced in for their safety.
A raised boardwalk allows visitors to
view the takin, as well as other
animals found to Bhutan
Bhutan takin is a subspecies
A youngster takin
It appears two of the subspecies of takin
have the black stripe along the spine (KSS)

Pseudois nayaur/Blue Sheep
Nemorhaedus baileyi/Himalayan Goral

There was a beautiful Himalayan Monal bird, but
we only have a photo of the ubiquitous crows
