Lewis & Clark Trip Day 4: Louisville I (5/11/2021)

Tuesday, May 11, 2021

*On 10/26/1803, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark set off from the Falls of the Ohio with several men comprising the Corps of Discovery, including William Clark's slave, York.*

Clarksville, IN: George Rogers Clark Homesite,
Lewis & Clark Historical Marker
Replica McGee indentured slave cabin
Replica cabin at the George Rogers Clark Homesite,
where William Clark met up with Meriwether Lewis
George Rogers Clark was the older brother of William Clark, who was already a famous American Revolutionary War hero. George Rogers Clark also founded Clarksville, IN (formerly Falls of the Ohio) and Louisville, KY. This homesite was his retirement place.
George Rogers Clark Homesite has a view of the Ohio River (KSS)
Across the street was the Lewis & Clark Bicentennial Park,
with a keelboat structure for children
This is why we had to walk to the Lewis & Clark Bicentennial Park
We crossed the Ohio River to Louisville.
Riverfront Plaza/Belvedere with a statue (1973,
by Felix de Weldon) of George Rogers Clark,
who is said to be pointing at the city he founded
Riverfront Plaza/Belvedere also has
a statue (2003, by Ed Hamilton) of York,
the slave of William Clark
The Red Feather (1975, by Alexander Calder)
Unique bicycle rack
Outsized copy of the Statue of David (2012,
by Serkan Özkaya) that belongs to the
21C Museum Hotel behind him; yes,
those are pink penguins on the roofline
We were able to go online last evening to purchase the required advance tickets for the Louisville Slugger Museum.
This 120-foot baseball Louisville Slugger bat
(1996) is the second largest bat in the world
At the Louisville Slugger Museum, you can hold a bat used
by a Major League Baseball player (one from each team)
plus six of some of the greatest players
Kent holds a bat used by Willie Mays
Lego model of the Cincinnati Great American
Ball Park stadium (KSS)
Tamiko hangs with Jackie Robinson (KSS)
Babe Ruth and Kent watch a home run hit
A bundle of billets come from the forests
and sawmills of the Hillerich & Bradsby Co
Many professional baseball players pick out the billets
they want to be turned into bats, choosing from
ash, maple and and birch
Phillies player Didi Gregorius has a variety of billets (KSS)
A billet goes into a CNC/computer numeric control
woodturning lathe ...
The lathe device moves along the billet ..
And voilà! you have a baseball bat for the pros
Other lathe machines make the bats for the rest of us.
The bats then have to be sanded, have the end knobs cut off,
(some bats are cupped), rubbed, stained or painted, (some
bats are "burned"), and branded or decaled
Arillated: The 21c Pip Mobile aka The Pomegranate Limo
(2007, by Monica Mahoney) is owned by the 21C Museum Hotel
The Pomegranate Limo is made with red glass arriloid gems
Louisville seems to keep building façades in place
The building or a reflection of a building?
Next: Louisville II.
