From Kansas we headed south into Missouri to pick up Route 66 again, but first:
Harry S Truman Birthplace State Historic Site (1959) with the c 1881 house of Truman's birth in 1884 in Lamar, MO |
The McDonald's-Studebaker-Truman mural in Lamar, MO
Precious Moments Chapel (1989) in Carthage, MO |
Meant to be the Sistine Chapel of America, all the murals and ceiling were done by artist Samuel Butcher, who created the Precious Moments figurines |
Samuel Butcher also made all the stained glass, here on the east side of the chapel ... |
... and on the west side; whether or not you like his saccharine large-eyed children, you can't fault his artistry |
Herald angels along the path to the chapel |
Another DeSantis-approved statue |
66 Drive-in Theatre (1949) is also featured in the Disney-Pixar movie Cars |
Boots Court (1939 in Art Deco and Streamline Moderne styles) |
Boots Court is now restored and will continue to have "A Radio in Every Room" and covered carports |

Carthage, MO is another of America's crossroads, this time with Route 66 and US-71, from International Falls, MN at the Canadian border to between Port Barre and Krotz Springs, LA at an intersection with US-190.
Jasper County Courthouse (1894-1895, by Max A Orloff, Jr in Richardsonian Romanesque style) |
The proprietor of Boots Court told us about Red Oak II, a dying town where a returning son (artist Lowell Davis) started buying up homes and businesses and moving them to his Fox Fire Farm near Carthage, MO |

Now many of the houses in Red Oak II are privately owned and used as residences, but visitors are welcome to wander around; a Roadside America attraction. |
