2023 Road Trip: Route 66: Missouri I (5/27/2023)

Saturday, May 27, 2023 (continued)
From Kansas we headed south into Missouri to pick up Route 66 again, but first:
Harry S Truman Birthplace State Historic Site (1959)
with the c 1881 house of Truman's birth in 1884 in Lamar, MO
The McDonald's-Studebaker-Truman mural in Lamar, MO
Precious Moments Chapel (1989) in Carthage, MO
Meant to be the Sistine Chapel of America,
all the murals and ceiling were done by
artist Samuel Butcher, who created
the Precious Moments figurines
Samuel Butcher also made all the stained glass,
here on the east side of the chapel ...
... and on the west side; whether or not you like his
saccharine large-eyed children, you can't fault his artistry
Herald angels along the path to the chapel
Another DeSantis-approved statue
66 Drive-in Theatre (1949) is also featured
in the Disney-Pixar movie Cars
Boots Court (1939 in Art Deco and Streamline Moderne styles)
Boots Court is now restored and will continue to have
"A Radio in Every Room" and covered carports
A 1948 Ford Deluxe sheriff's car "hides" behind a billboard
Carthage, MO is another of America's crossroads, this time with Route 66 and US-71, from International Falls, MN at the Canadian border to between Port Barre and Krotz Springs, LA at an intersection with US-190.
Jasper County Courthouse (1894-1895, by
Max A Orloff, Jr in Richardsonian Romanesque style)
The proprietor of Boots Court told us about Red Oak II,
a dying town where a returning son (artist Lowell Davis)
started buying up homes and businesses and moving them
to his Fox Fire Farm near Carthage, MO
No 80 Trolley Diner, Town Hall, and Feed and Seed Store
Now many of the houses in Red Oak II are privately owned and used as residences, but visitors are welcome to wander around; a Roadside America attraction.

Standard Oil Gas Station (1916) was also
relocated from Avilla, MO
All we saw in Avilla, MO was this Route 66 mural
on Lottie's Soda Shoppe and General Store
Phillips 66 Service Station (1925) in Spencer, MO
Johnson Creek Bridge (1923) is a Pratt Through Truss Bridge
Gay Parita Sinclair Filling Station (2004 reconstruction of
